The Phoenicia Malta
A peerless mid-century architectural marvel adjacent to Valletta’s bastion gates, offering seven acres of manicured Mediterranean flora and an infinity pool carved atop the fortification walls.
Architectural Heritage & Bastion Setting
Commissioned in the late 1930s and ceremoniously opened in 1947, The Phoenicia was Malta's very first five-star luxury hotel. Designed by William Binnie in an elegant Art Deco vernacular adapted to the island's famous golden Globigerina stone, the property occupies a strategic promontory just yards before the monumental Valletta City Gate designed by Renzo Piano.
One of its greatest physical distinctions is its 7.5 acres of private botanical gardens. In a walled peninsula where space has been at a premium since the 16th century, these manicured terraces lead guests gently toward the bastion walls, culminating in a dramatic infinity swimming pool that hangs directly over Marsamxett Harbour.
Gastronomy & Wellness
The hotel is home to Contessa, where Mediterranean farm-to-table cuisine is served under a glass conservatory overlooking the gardens, and the legendary Palm Court lounge, famous for its classical afternoon tea service. The Phoenicia Spa by Deep Nature is carved directly into historic limestone foundations, featuring hydrotherapy pools, authentic salt rooms, and bespoke herbal therapies.
